23 Griffin Way, Saturday evening

Dani was so happy her new dining room table had arrived just in time for the first fancy dinner in her new house. She had food delivered from Taste of Thai and brought out her best silverware (okay, it was her only silverware at the moment). She wanted to be sure that her dad knew that she was doing very well without him and without Davis money.

Now, hopefully Vince and his friend had remembered the dress code for tonight was rather formal. Dani had reminded Vince to dress up if he was going to meet her father.

"We'll see," Vince said. "I'm sure we'll figure something out."

"Seriously, do you really want to move in?" asked Dani, smiling. She would have hated the idea a few days ago, but now that Ken had told her about her brother's upcoming wedding...

"I really do," Vince said. "I mean, this place is way better than my flat."

"It would be rather convenient to merge our assets," said Dani. She waited a bit, then added, "I am speaking metaphorically, of course."

"...well, literally would be fun, too," Vince said.

"You know it would," said Dani. "It's too bad you can't stay over tonight, with my dad being here and everything."

"Maybe we could put something in his drink, he'd sleep right through it..." Vince said.

"Please tell me that you're kidding?" pleaded Dani, a horrified look on her face.

"...I am?" Vince said. "Oh, yes, of course I am."

Vince lived in a crazy, sitcommy world.

Dani felt that it was time for a change of subject. "It's a shame that my brother couldn't make it here. I think you would have liked Junior. He drives a Porsche."

"Oh, very fancy," Vince said. "I've never really been much into cars, though. Except toy ones, they're genius."

"Yes, I'm sure you and Junior would have gotten along," said Dani, trying not to read too much into Vince's words. He had just offered to drug her dad.

"And it sounds like my brother is getting married, too. I might have to go home at some point and meet this debutante he's supposed to marry."

"Married? Well, too bad for him, eh?" Vince said, grinning.

"Yeah, my dad must really be putting pressure on him," said Dani.

"Poor guy," Vince said.

"...you think he'd try to make us get married? If he knew?"

"That depends on how much money you have, but I have my doubts," said Dani, lowering her voice. "You see, he was married to Junior's mother, but not my mother. But don't tell anyone. It's not something I like to share."

It's too bad she forgot that the squirrels hear everything.

"Right," Vince said. "So... that makes you his little lovechild, then, doesn't it? Wacky!"

"It's bizarre, isn't it? I had no idea either, until I tried to track down my mother through divorce records and she turned out not to be my mother after all," said Dani.

"That's so strange," Vince said. "Though, I guess, as an orphan, I don't really follow."
