Dani was not pleased with the job the painters had done on her kitchen. "I wanted warm and inviting. Instead, I got sunny side up!" she yelled. "This needs to be completely re-done in a much lighter shade of yellow. I want to see this room finished before you leave today." The painters rolled their eyes, but Dani was paying the bills. After checking to make sure she was happy with the new color, they went back to work.
In the meantime, Dani decided to sit out on the veranda with a magazine, making sure that the painters could still see her from the kitchen windows. She planned on checking on them repeatedly until the job was done. Just as she got settled in her lounge chair, her phone rang, with her brother's number in the Caller Id window.
"Hey, sis! How are things going?" asked Junior, sounding so cheerful that Dani was convinced that he was faking it.
"I'm doing great when the alligators aren't attacking," said Dani, smirking. She wished she could see the look on her brother's face.
"Uh, huh, the alligators," laughed Junior, though he didn't sound comfortable. "Hey, Dad was wondering when you're going to be buying a new car to replace the Mercedes you totaled in the accident. He had some ideas..."
"I'm not buying car. I don't need one on this island, since the roads are too narrow," said Dani, cutting him off. "Instead, I'm taking my insurance settlement and putting it into my new house."
"You're buying a house?" asked Junior, surprised. "Are you sure? You remember what happened when I moved out? Besides, I thought you were living in a hotel."
"I decided it was time I got a place of my own and lived off my own money," said Dani, not particularly eager to admit that she was moving out because she'd slept with the hotel owner.
"You mean Dad's money, right?" pointed out Junior. "That's where we're different. When I left, I didn't take a dime from him."
"No, you just took money from your mother who took it from Dad anyway, so Dad had to make some shady deals to recover his losses and that got him arrested," Dani shot back.
"Look, Dani, I'm just looking out for your best interests," said Junior. "I know that you want to try and make it on your own just to stick it to Dad for taking over the farm, but at some point you're going to run out of money, just like I did."
"No, that's not going to happen," said Dani, in an irritated tone of voice. "I've proven my ability to run a successful business without Dad's money. Who kept Davis Farms running when Daddy was in jail and all the money was gone? I'm going to survive just fine on my own and I wish you had a little more faith in me."
"Okay, okay, I believe you," said Junior, not wanting to get into an argument. "Let's change the subject. What else is new with you?"
Dani figured she knew the fastest way to shut her brother up. "Oh, I'm just enjoying sleeping my way through the whole town," she said. "I've had more sexual partners in the past week than I've had in the past two years!"
"Okay, I didn't need to know that," said Junior. "I'm going to go now. But seriously, Dani, if you need money, let me know and I'll talk to Dad for you, okay?"
"Over my dead body, Junior," said Dani. "But I'll prove it to you. I won't take another penny from Dad. You'll never have to worry about your inheritance."
She hung up on him. Despite her confidence while she was on the phone, she was a little worried about what Junior had said about surviving without taking another handout from her father. Maybe she should think about renting out the extra bedrooms in this house after all.
